This year, the SJF Redfish Tournament not only broke the prior year’s record for anglers, boats, fundraising, and prizes, but also beat last year’s world record for the highest payout in a redfish tournament! Anglers set their lines out at 5PM and we were blessed again this year with some beautiful weather & lots of fish were biting! More than 250 Red Drum were caught!
Tournament organizers reported a total of 988 anglers this year, including over 100 youth anglers and more than 4,500 attendees!
Thirteen year old Wilson Harrell, a Fayetteville native, got a bite just 40 minutes into the evening resulting in a massive 52.5 inch drum! “I was excited but scared at the same time, because we caught him so early,” Harrell said. “We waited for someone else to catch something bigger.” Harrell actually had the very first reported catch of the evening, and managed to hang on to the title until the clock struck 9:00pm, winning him a whopping $80,300! For an event that aims to connect local youth with the outdoors, there couldn’t be a more deserving winner.
It’s no secret that the success of the Sarah James Fulcher Redfish Tournament is much in part due to Hunter Parks & Stephanie Fulcher’s deep passion for the event. After their passing in February, many stepped up to try and help fill their shoes, in order to continue the event in which they helped start five years ago. The band stage at the tournament has been dedicated to the memory of Hunter Parks, and the silent auction in memory of Stephanie Fulcher, who was known to many of us as “Sissy”. Their physical presence will be deeply missed, but their memories will live on with the Sarah James Fulcher Redfish Tournament.
